A Close Call - attacked when about to jump through a gate

As ever, i was being careless.  I wanted to get to Altrinur from Jita and decided to go the route that took me through Low Sec.

I assumed that an empty Interceptor would not be bothered.  So i was warping from gate to gate.

I of course assumed wrong . . . . . . . .

I warped off a gate, landed on the next gate ready to jump through . . . and wham, i am seeing my shields, armour and hull going red in a hurry.

The good news was that i got away with it (just).

Looks like my attackers got nailed by the gate guns as i made my escape.

In the next system i warped off to a safe spot and cloaked up as my shields repaired.

Not sure why i survived - may have something to do with my recent skill training:

Or my attackers may just have not been too accurate.

It is these little events that give me some confidence that i can operate in Low and Null Sec.

Current fit is:

[Taranis]
'Halcyon' Core Equalizer I
Inertial Stabilizers II
Inertial Stabilizers II

5MN Y-T8 Compact Microwarpdrive
EM Ward Amplifier II
Medium Shield Extender II

Prototype Cloaking Device I

Small Low Friction Nozzle Joints I
Small Low Friction Nozzle Joints I

  1. They were smartbombers. They don't have to lock you. You survived because you jumped before they could hit again. Your shield extender gave some HP and also one of them was doing kinetic damage, your highest resist. See that the Machariel doing less damage than the Typhoon. They also used cheap meta bombs.

Now, your fit raises some questions. With the 2 Inertia stabilizers and the 2 lof riction nozzle joints you can warp below 2 seconds, so you can never be locked. Only smartbombers can hit you, just like they did. So why is the warp stab? And what are you using the MWD for? And if you are hauling expensive stuff in this, why is the cheap fit?

    This has 4x higher EHP:

    Shadow Serpentis Inertial Stabilizers
    Inertial Stabilizers II
    Damage Control II

    Republic Fleet Medium Shield Extender

    2. Using an Ares instead of a Taranis gives you an additional lowslot, more speed, less sig and a bit of aglity.
If you use the additional lowslot for a PDS you even gain a bit more tank.
And you gain enough PG for a cloak, not neccessary but might prove helpfull if you have to sit in a safe until trouble blows over in lowsec.

You could faction the PDS up to Caldari Navy for 1% more shield.

  2. As Gevlon stated, you were hit by smartbombs. The only reason you survived was because these smartbombers were not particularly smart - using a poor mix of cheap metas.

As stated prviously, lose the WCS - you don't need it, with the I-stabs and low friction nozzles. I'd also lose the MWD - if you get into a situation where you need a prop module to escape, an AB will be better. The MWD will bloat your signature and make you an easy-to-lock/kill target. And, if you are thinking to use the cloak-MWD trick, you don't need it with a fast inty.

Use EFT to see if you can replace the I-stabs with nanos, and keep the same warpout time. When possible, nanos are the preferred choice over I-stabs since they don't increase your signature. Remember, too, that the server essentially processes events on 1 sec intervals, with fractional seconds effectively being rounded up, so a warpout time of 1.7 seconds is actually no better than a warpout time of 1.9 seconds - they both get processed as if they were 2 seconds. Just get the number below 2.0 seconds, with as few I-stabs and low friction nozzles, as possible.

For tank, a DC II in your lows is a better choice, than shield extenders in your mids.

As for the recommended faction gear, I personally would not bother with it. It costs more and you can still -and eventually will - be killed by a proper smartbomb gang. Keep the fit cheap, agile, with a low signature.

Also, don't travel in a clone with expensive implants. A smartbomb camp has a fairly good chance to pod you, as well.
