Someone has Blundered

. . . . . . namely me, again.

I was putting up a Sell Order for two Drake Blueprints and I fingers literally trip off my mouse onto the Enter key.

I was aiming to sell for somewhere nearer then 699m mark and ended up selling for 10k each.

A nice loss of 1.4bn.  That was annoying, to say the least.

Now, blundering is all part of the game.  I get that.  And these cheeky Buy Orders are set up to catch such blunders.  I get that also.  CCP is not there to protect idiots.  I get that.  Mistakes are made in Ship pvp, so why not on the market also?  I get that.

That said, there can surely be a mechanism where the Sell Order for any item defaults to the last price I posted a similar Sell Order?  I note this happens occasionally but not always.  Heck, there could even be an additional ISK fee to pay to activate such a mechanism.

It would save me a bundle.  Has been a while since I got a blunder in my favour.

What not to Haul in one shot

I don't often single events out in Eve as an example of what not to do - but this has to be an exception.  I spotted this on reddit.

This zkillboard link shows an Iteron Mark V being killed with cargo of 48bn ISK in it.

That had to hurt.

We could perhaps question the values assigned to the Blueprint Copies - but nonetheless, that is a lot to be transporting in a mere hauler like that.

As ever, i advise using courier contracts to have items hauled including this discussion right at the start of my business on Eve on why using courier contracts makes good business sense.

I have also discussed why i am willing to pay much more to get my items to their destination within 24 hours.

There is a video of a presentation at Eve Fanfest 2015 from a Red Frog member.

A 1bn ISK blunder by me

Annoying.

Has been a while since i was on the wrong end of a blunder - but today was that day.

I was putting a Typhoon Blueprint up for sale in Jita and instead of inputting 1115049998 i input 115049998.  Easy mistake to make though i should have double checked.

My heart skipped a beat when the market page refreshed and my sell order was not there.

And, there below, it is.

Someone has made a nice earner today.  They could immediately flip it to that Buy order and make 735m ISK profit before taxes and fees.

I tend to find the blunders balance out over time - someone will make a blunder in my favour at some stage.

. . . . . . . if the market system was coded to ensure that no sell order could be placed below the highest buy order then that, you know, would be just marvellous.

This just breaks my heart - a Plex blunder

Every time i see someone miss-sell a Plex it just breaks my heart.

In the image below it appears someone has sold at least one Plex at 910 ISK when i very much suspect they meant to sell at 910,000,000 ISK.  A classic miss-posting that can occur in Eve.

The current view is that the sandbox nature of Eve Online means that players must live with those mistakes - CCP are not here to protect players from themselves.

In the above case, this could be a Plex trader - in which case that is less of an issue.  They can take such losses and likely make such a mistake every so often.

It could though be someone who has spent $15 to buy a Plex and miss-sold it on the market - that would be a bigger problem.  i would hope they get their due ISK if they put in a ticket to CCP.

However, it does point to the flaw in the current market system.  On today's exchanges - Sell orders that are priced below posted below Buy orders are settled at the price of those Buy orders.

So, in the above example, the Sell order would have sold at something like 868,000,000 ISK even if it was posted at a mere 910 ISK.

I am no coder - but i wonder how much additional time and resource this would require?

Someone made a Plex blunder

I noticed this when looking at the Plex market in one of the regions.

As shown in the image below, someone sold at least 1 Plex for 8.1m instead of the intended 811m (i suspect).  I can only assume this must have been a key input entry.

The image below shows where the current Buy and Sell orders were sitting:

The point here is that the market mechanics allowed the unfortunate seller to not even achieve the highest placed Buy orders but infact fill the best placed Buy order with the erroneous input Sell price.

Now, i am not sitting here suggesting the market mechanics need to be sorted out to prevent this from happening (Eve, after all, is Eve) but there has to be a good argument for having a toggle switch which the player can set to allow all sell orders they place to be, at worst, immediately settled by the best Buy order.  This will not save the Seller from avoiding the sale going through but it would at least prevent what has happened above.

It is very hard to think of a order driven market where the above can be allowed to happen in real life.

For sure, this would not help where there is only one Buy order of 1 ISK.  But it will help in many cases.

I also suspect that this would prevent some in game "money laundering" where the origins of illegally purchased ISK is disguised by making multiple transactions through seemingly unrelated players at little cost.

I only hope the seller of this Plex had not spent $15 on its purchase.

(For the record, the blunder was not committed by me!)

Someone blundered on a Sell Order

Came across this whilst going through the market in null-sec.com

Someone has posted for Sale a Capital Processor Overclocking Unit 1 for 1 ISK vs the going price in Amarr of perhaps 20m.

I greatly suspect they meant to post that as a Buy order.

I of course purchased the item - it was only 2 jumps out of Amarr and in Highsec.

A nice small profit for me (once i am able to sell the item).

Someone has blundered

While perusing the market I spotted this below:

Someone has posted a Capital Energy Burst Aerator I for 1 ISK vs the normal price of 4.6m.

Not the biggest of blunders but I am willing to bet that the seller was infact trying to post a Buy Order for 1 ISK.

As ever, these blunders are for info - I can guarantee that I will make blunders and likely breakeven on the "blunder trade"!

A nervous wait

So, i am updating my Sell orders in Rens.  I get to the 5 items of Capital Capacitor Control Circuit I i am selling and incorrectly enter the Sell order as 32,103,269 instead of 62,103,269, as shown below.

Fortunately, all the Buy orders were at 20.8m or below - so i did not fill any Buy orders.

I then have a nervous 5 minute wait for the cool down before i can correct my mistake.

5 minutes is a long time in the market!

Fortunately i am able to update my Sell order before anyone comes along and snaps up a good deal.

Luck was with me that day.

Account expiry embarrassment

I finance my account with Plex and therefore i get the monthly email reminding me to renew my subscription.  Which i forgot about.  And i also forget about the one reminding me i have 19 hours left.

I log in 4 hours overdue.  Account expired, can't get in.  Clearly i am my own worst enemy.

Annoyingly, in my corporation hanger in Jita are 72 Plex.

My solution:
  • I get an alt from another account (which had not expired) to fly to Jita
  • I buy a Plex (i could have just taken one from the corp hanger in Jita)
  • Activate it
  • and "Donate 30 days of game time" to my alt in the expired account

I was not able to do this from a Plex in the corp hanger unless i was in Jita - hence the need to at least fly over there.

I may have been able to move one from the corp hanger to an alt hanger in Jita and Donate it remotely - but i did not try that.

Needless to say, when the reminder email came the next month - i renewed immediately!

I have labelled this under "blunder".

Someone blundered - but asked politely for their ISK back.

I log in to see one of my alts with 2.3bn ISK in their wallet.  Not bad for one night.

But then there is also a mail waiting from a player - seems he blundered on entering a Buy order and my Sell order picked up the 1.2bn ISK or so extra:

and the current market backs this up:

Had this blunder gone silently i would have kept the ISK (and no doubt posted it on this blog).

However, to be fair to the player - he (i assume it is a he) did get in contact, was polite and there is no harm in attempting to reverse some of the loss.

So, the state of affairs is this:

  • i have a Sell order for 213m ISK
  • i get 1440m ISK
  • the player meant to do a Buy order for 144m ISK
  • the blunder in my favour benefited me by 1227m ISK (1440 - 213)
  • the blunder against the player hit him for 1296m ISK (1440 - 144)

So, i return 1.1bn ISK to the player and keep the other 100 - 200m ISK for myself to cover sundries like the sales tax (13m ISK) and a slap up meal at Miss Miggins Pie Shop (thats is a Blackadder reference).

A blunder averted

Well, the warning box worked this time.

I was updating my sell order for the item below and was about to enter one too few digits which would have resulted in a large loss of about 200m.

The old sell price was 111.878m and i was going to sell it for 11.872m.

Fortunately the warning box kicked in and saved the day.

i am noticing the warning box operating more frequently these days and i wonder if there has been a small coding change recently.

Someone blundered (perhaps), i gained (for sure)

This is another one of those posts where i was lucky enough to take advantage of either someone's blunder or a sale that did not complete - for former is a blunder, the latter is not.

In the image above one of two things has happened.  Either someone has decided to put a buy order up for 1 Capital Auxiliary Nano Pump but instead put a sell order up or someone has sold a bunch of them to buy orders which were not enough at the price specified and so one remaining sell order has remained up.

Eitherway, staring me in the face is the chance to purchase an item for 48m and put it back up to sell at 69m.

Promptly done!

An odd trade

I can't say i am too sure what i am seeing below.

There are two items, each with a very low sell order in at 1m ISK, which is not only way below the Region fair price but also below the Jita Buy and Sell order prices.

At first glance, it may be someone meaning to put up a Buy order or just blundered on putting up their sell order.

In any event, i purchased both items - a sure winner on my part and perhaps a blunder on the sellers part.

But then i inspected the recent Sells i had made and discovered i had sold these items to the same player (name withheld to protect a dignity!) who had then re-listed them to sell at these low prices:

So, not really sure what is happening here . . . . . . .

Saved by the game mechanic

These can often go either way but on this occasion the game mechanic saved me.

Below i am attempting to sell a Capital Semiconductor Memory Cell I and i have put one too many 9's in the sell price and so i am attempting to sell about 10x above the normal sale price.  If that had gone through then it would have cost me 18.7m ISK in Broker Fees which would have effectively been wasted and likely wiped out my profits for the sale on this product.

As with all traders, i am typing in my sell price at lightning speed and so could miss the clues in the image below.

Fortunately, the game mechanic kicked in and asked me if i really wanted to go ahead with this.  I was saved from myself.

In the moment between pressing "enter" on the sale price and the warning box coming up, my life generally goes into slow motion.

On other occasions the sale price goes through and i waste between 10m to 100m on Broker Fees.

In all, i suspect i am break-even on blunders.

(Another) big blunder in my favour

again, i have been on the lucky end of a blunder!

When i log on i always take a quick look at he sales i have made.  Today i noted that i had sold the Black Ops skillbook for 595m ISK, which did seem a rather a high amount.

Upon checking the market, my suspicions were confirmed:

I was selling the Black Ops skillbook for 69.9m ISK.

Hence, looking at the above, it would appear that the buyer had meant to put in a buy order for 59,500,001 ISK but instead did not in one too many zeros and hit my sell order (which must have been the lowest at the time) for 595,000,001 ISK.

I suspect it was this way round rather than missing the decimal place given that would have bought my item for 5.95bn ISK!

And just to prove that this happens to us all, this player had been playing since 2007.

A big blunder in my favour

Seems blunders cut both ways . . . . . doubtless i will be “repaying” this blunder back at some point in the future!

I logged on and noticed that my Dodixie trader had made sales of 2.4bn since i last checked and the biggest single sale was a Pith A-Type Explosive Deflection Field which sold for 1.55bn ISK.

Upon investigation, i discovered that the sales price for this item was actually only 34m ISK where as the best buy order was sitting at 15.5m ISK.

Hence, what happened here i suspect is that the Buyer meant  to put on a buy order for 15.5m ISK but added an extra “0” into the order and so created a buy order for 1.55bn ISK - and therefore bought one of my sell orders where was up for a mere 34m ISK.  Painful.

And just to add to the matter – the character that bought the item had been playing since September 2008!

Someone's blunder is my gain

I see these types of blunders a lot.

. . . . . as a primer, I am not posting these to mock the people making the mistakes, I make enough myself to last a lifetime . . . . .

as shown in the market window for this Eifyr implant the sell orders are mostly around the 1,288,997 mark and there is a buy order at 260,000.03 ISK.

However, there is a sell order at 260,000.04 ISK.  Clearly, this "seller" meant to post the order as a buy order, and the best buy order at that.  However, they blundered and posted as a sell instead - which is not hard to do if you are in a hurry.

Alternatively, they meant to sell a sell order that was posted at 260,000.04 which maybe had 3 item at that price and the seller put on a sell order for 8 items at 260,000.04 but of course only 3 were filled leaving 5 to go.

of course, I took advantage of this blunder and bought these 5 items for 260,000.04 to resell at the current selling price.  a nice and easy 5m ISK profit for no work at all.

I blunder, again

I note that at Dodixie there are no Sell orders for Mjolnir Heavy Missile Blueprints.  A low but stable level of income for me.  We are not talking big money here, profits of 1m ISK per sale – but every penny counts and it is low maintenance.

So, 10 of these blueprints are part of a 2bn ISK haul that comes from Jita courtesy of Pushx Industries.  When i come to posting the blueprints i put in 3 too many 9’s.  My selling price is 1,780,999,999 instead of 1,780,999.  I am selling 10 and of course i pay a 0.72% broker fee.

That blunder cost be 129m ISK straight off.  Painful stuff.  In a sense, the next c600m ISK of sales i make will be covering for this mistake.  Or put it another way, it is the best part of a day's profits gone!

One way i could have protected myself is to empty my wallet into the Corp and hence a large broker fee like that would fail and prevent me from posting . . . . . . . . which is what i will be doing going forwards.  I should have been holding no more than 20m ISK in my wallet, if my maths serves me well here

Someone has blundered

Below is a common example of a blunder I see:

above is the buy and sell orders for Medium Hull Repairer II.  The are selling for just under 5m ISK and the buyers have set buy orders for 1.1m ISK.

. . . . . and also, in the sell orders, as can be seen, is a seemingly cheap sell order for 1,125,000.71 ISK.

well, not quite.  Clearly, it was meant to be a buy order overcutting the last buy order by 0.01 ISK but was entered as a sell order by mistake.

so I bought it.  Easy money to be made there.

Needless to say, I make my fair share of mistakes entering trades!

A mistake in my favour

I logged in to a particularly large balance in my wallet and, as is normally the case, i did a quick look at recent trades filled.  Sure enough, i had sold a Centus C-Type Armor Explosive Hardener for 420m ISK . . . . . . . . . . which seemed rather a lot.

Indeed, checking on the market prices showed that they are typically selling for 97m ISK.  Odd.

But then looking at the Buy orders, buyers are willing to pay 42m ISK.

So, now it becomes clear what happened.  The unfortunate person meant to set the buy order for 42,000,313.91 but instead added an additional zero to make it 420,003,013.91 and my order was the lowest sell order at the time and so got filled.

I have done something similar myself so i feel the pain!  Sort of.
